Cannot get my phone to charge using any of the 3 usb c ports inside the car - phone charges OK indoors. Testing the cable I connected my bike computer and to my surprise it started charging - so there is nothing wrong with the cable or the phone. Does anybody use these ports to charge their phones successfully?

You could try buying an adaptor to plug into the 12v port with a USB the other side. Couple of quid. I have one because I often need to charge more than one phone at a time and my wireless dongle is plugged into the data port.
