Hi Everyone,
For who does not know me, I specialise in modifying aka building custom battery packs for OEM EVs.
Above I posted some pictures of the current project I'm working on - VW Transporter eAbt MY2021. It'll have a 80kWh pack at the end. Now, working on reverse engineering the can bus protocol. Looks promising.

In the pictures above, I'm taking a can bus log during a charging session.

Anyone interested in a custom pack?

There is possibly a big market for eTransporters with 80kWh batteries! I’ve seen new and lightly-used eTransporters for sale ridiculously cheap so there’s your feedstock. What about charging? Can you provide 100kW rapid charging?

I would advise against it, as the battery is not cooled at all.

First battery prototype will have liquid cooling, but will see how effective is it during testing phase.

Is it possible to supplement the battery with an additional battery instead of replacing the whole pack?

Agree. Transporters are so popular as campers one with a close to 200 mile range would undoubtably be a winner

100kw charging would be ideal but even with the standard 50kw it’d be a solid choice for a camper, especially with the cheap price second hand ones are going for

Any estimate for the weight increase? The base van looks to be speced as 2163 kg so already 100kg more than the 75kWh Stellantis equiverlents.

in theory yes - but all the ideas need testing. Got an extra battery for testing purposes?
I don't, I'm just about ok with the range at the moment with a bit of faffing for occaisional longer journey, but I'm thinking once i've finished using it for my business in 2-3 years it might be interesting to convert to camper van.

I haven't looked at it at all until your post in this thread, so no idea on the battery specs etc How is the 77kWh battery option, is it a second module, or more cells in the same module? Wondered if there was a possibility to make your own battery pack in the payload area, even if it's 20kWh or so to get a little extra range.

Hi Looking for battery upgrade for VW e transporter.

Hi Paul,
Thx for the interest. I'll keep posting the progress on this project. Once the prototype is in and testing irons out all the gremlins - you'll be the first to have a test drive ;)

At this moment, I have few days worth of logging during charge, discharge/drive. The data is being processed and we have some progress on this end. It's very similar to other VW hybrids and electric cars from 2014-2019.

How is the project getting on? I forgot to ask both where roughly you are based and if you had a rough figure in mind as to the eventual cost for the battery replacement?
Waiting for some custom pcbs. Will be testing the info we have acquired so far.

The work is carried out near Reading.

I think it's early to talk about figures. I'll do the math at the end and let you know.

Great - as mentioned it’ll be interesting to see how the project pans out, the e-transporter as it is is a bit useless but with a larger pack suddenly it makes sense - we are on the lookout for a vehicle that can do 200+ miles while having a vast boot for the dogs and kids stuff - probably the closest currently are the PSA 75kwh vans but even those fail to reach 200 even in the best conditions

If you want 200+ miles, then Nissan E-NV200 is your best bet. I own one myself. I also build 82kWh packs for those. Bulletproof vans - compared to others. It's a smaller van, compared to PSA or eTransporter.
Anyway, we all have different tastes so choose wisely :)

100% this!

80kWh changes everything!

For info, as I've tried searching without anything coming up, what are the details on the larger battery version from the factory? Is it two packs side by side, or missing cells from one pack?

Is it feasible to buy a 2nd van and transfer the battery over? I'm slightly tempted, as for £12k ish for a 2nd van, move the pack over and keep the donor van for parts/sell on parts as and when. Presuming a lot of the non-electric parts are transferable to diesel vans. Crazy?
