What does my battery lease actually mean?

I bought a used battery lease Zoe at the start of this year as an eBay gamble. The seller and I completed the lease transfer forms but RCI/Mobilize didn't act on it, despite me chasing to make sure I wasn't racking up arrears. Finally managed to get them on the phone at the start of the summer and since July the direct debits have been coming out correctly.

I'm wondering how much it would cost me to buy out the battery, and think I have to phone to get a quote (they take months to reply to emails). But looking at the actual agreement has got me thinking:

Why is it limited to 12 months? (i.e. when I've paid 12xÂŁ59 does that mean they will consider the lease paid off)? Or are they all worded like that with a minimum 12 month term and then continuing at the same rate until terminated?

That is normal for the lease as it says. You are taking it for a minimum of 12 months and after that it continues at that rate until you decide to change the rate, sell the vehicle with the battery lease (and new owner takes it over) or buy it out.
And no the lease is never paid off after 12 months of payments... That would be nice though.

OK thanks, that’s what I assumed but it’s just worded strangely (presumably because it’s a proforma for a vehicle lease that’s been badly adapted!)

Also, to answer my own question, I now have a quote for buying it out (having phoned them up) - about ÂŁ1100 which is less than I was expecting. If I decide to PX it any time soon I might well do that first as I don't expect anyone (even Renault dealers?) will touch it otherwise.

The battery lease is essentially a rental contract. You rent the battery and own the shell. Renault guarantee the battery to a minium performance level during the contract. The old NIssan battrery lease included recovery (towing). That was for any breakdown, not just a flat battery. No idea if that is part of the latest Renault battery lease.

Very hard to sell on an EV with a leased battery. Dealers had no interest in mine and that was back in 2017. I handed the car back to RCI at the end of the PCP and battery rental contracts.

Agreed, so probably worth a grand to give a bit more flexibility when I decide to get rid of it for something with a bit more range (although it’s a second car, the range is small enough to give you second thoughts about using it for anything other than very local journeys)
