Great news! I've been trying to persuade my family to get an EV. My brother traded in a BMW i8 (which he refers to as a midlife crisis car!) for a BMW 300e, without considering the i4. I took him for a ride in my Corsa, and he was impressed how quiet and fast it was, and the fact I'd driven half way across the country with no problems. I think his next will be a full EV; he already has a home chargepoint.

My older sister is only 4 years older than me, but she's a different generation - X, while I'm an X-ennial, and my younger sister is a millennial. It's surprising how different our worldviews are, despite growing up in the same house. My younger sister would love an EV, but couldn't justify the expense. She and her husband bought a petrol MG ZS - they preferred the EV, but for the same price they could get the petrol one, and a Kia Picanto too. Next time I think they'll go electric. It won't be easy to fit a home chargepoint, but my pillar proves it's possible, and in their case they won't need to ask the neighbours as it'll all be on their own land. Lots of new public chargers in Sheffield will surely help, if for no other reason than that they'll see lots more EVs, and their friends might get them too. Peer pressure is powerful.

My older sister doesn't want an EV, doesn't want to understand why it's better, doesn't want to learn a new interface, doesn't want change. They keep cars for a long time; they were running an 03 Passat until 2017. I imagine they'll still be using petrol until its difficult to buy, and probably complain about all these EV spaces she can't park in.

Um, I'm a boomer, and nor are we!

Though, FWIW, I do generally keep my cars for a long time, and would not be surprised if, before I decide my Leaf needs replacing, my daughter will be gently prising the car keys from my palsied fingers...

I think it helped that I didn't learn to drive until my late 20's and therefore was much more appreciative of having any car that I've never considered spending too much on them hence old second hand definitely boring ones which I've kept for years. I rather spent my money on skiing holidays and the like, and semi-retired at 50.. But age is sometimes an attitude of mind: I've been getting my state pension for a couple of years now but still turn out for the reserves football side where I add a bit of experience to the youngest at 16 or 17! They are faster than me though..

So Rbrian, keep plugging away gently at your sister: remember, show not tell. :) I'll be in Sheffield for the game on Friday if you need back-up, I'd probably not have spent the money if I were still ICE.

tricky right? honestly I'd just mash everything that isn't live yet but is planned in one map (could you add as a layer to the existing one?) Let people know it might be being built, might be waiting for power, might be approved but not built yet, might be still pending planning approval. Its just an indicator of intent and may help people gain confidence in the network where they often travel?

Thats really why I did the mini cornwall one - partly for my own benefit and also to counter a couple of people worried about EVs down there. Its not a 'look its solved' thing, but more a 'don't put off buying one just because there isn't a charger at X right now - there will be soon'

Given your older sister's views you would probably get the most bang on convincing them to replace their cars more often with ones that are about 5 years newer than the one they currently have. From an air quality point of view the bottom 20% of cars cause most of the issues.

I do look back with hindsight at just how often I changed cars and arguably wasted good money on being bored of a perfectly good car. Not done the sums though it’ll just depress m
Your biggest loss if you are buying new is the asymmetric information loss. You see this in the non-linear nature of the log of strike price with new vs used cars and age.

Good work! Couple of comments:
  • I don't think there are 6 each side going in at Strensham. There was work going on recently but it only resulted in two medium power chargers on the southbound side which are waiting to be turned on. No sign of anything else happening.
  • the Gloucester Dobbies should be on this map rather than the other, it isn't live yet.
  • last week there were 12 Gridserves waiting to go live at hilton park northbound (nothing southbound).
  • there is a big shell hub in build here Shell · 100 Derby Rd, Liverpool, Bootle L20 1BP, United Kingdom
  • JyGT has lots of in-build and planned MFG hubs on the map in his/her signature, see the MFG thread.
  • Edit - Fastned's last annual report showed their planned sites in 2023, but it's pretty far zoomed out...

There's a hub planned at Old Craighall, Musselburgh just off the A1 where it joins the Edinburgh bypass. I couldn't find the planning application but the signs suggest MFG and a Costa.
The old service station there appears to have been raised to the ground. Who knows whether there will be any conventional fuel available, but then who cares. 😂

Winchester A34 - InstaVolt have an application in for their first 'Super Hub' at Three Maids Hill roundabout, this is the northern access to the city as you drive south. Should have bays for 'dozens of cars, towing vehicles, and HGVs'.

If interested, search inside Simple Search and use ref 23/01594/FUL
