Awesome.

That will also make second hand values plummet.
Also shows that the taxpayer contribution went straight to Kia as extra profit.
Good point. Calculator out: Ave battery cost is $137/kWh * 64 = $8,768 (ÂŁ6,359). Some are quoting prices close to $100/kWh. Then you take out the engine and all the associated parts and replace this with a cheaper electric drive. So what should the price be with some reasonable profit and overhead from R&D?
As much as they can get away with. We are in a capitalist society.

That price move will have to also shove the Ioniq down given the capacity and power.

It is still an over priced small car really. Given the fact this model is now several years old and battery manufacturing costs are still coming down there's more room for reduction. The ICE model starts at ÂŁ17K let's not forget.
Where are you getting ÂŁ17k from? Is that Manual or Automatic? Is it a similar spec? People often forget to account for those when making comparisons. But yes, I do agree that there's still room for improvement and when we have more competition this will happen... Remember the e-Niro/Kona started off at around ÂŁ32k but increased due to demand. They can't do the same now with the ID.3 selling for around ÂŁ30k

It's the cheapest ICE starting price.

Base specs typically aren't sold on EVs and we know why...

Where? Let's ignore specs, I think we should at least compare Auto with Auto. Automatics always come with a premium.

I am not normally that cynical, but in this case, it looks like it as they have reduced their RSP by ÂŁ3,000 at the drop of a hat.

I just saw the headline figure on a Google search, which comes up with "RRP: From ÂŁ17,396"

I was just making a general point really, the entry point for the ICE version is a lot lower.

I don’t think we should compare a 1.0 litre car with an EV.
Of course.

The point was the car itself is a relatively cheap Korean hatchback as an ICE. That's why even at 35K with a 64kwh battery pack and an electric motor, I don't think it's great value. That's the point...

I agree. I honestly think the i3 I had felt more worthy of its high price tag than the Kona does, despite the battery size difference, equipment levels etc. The Kona just feels cheaply made and engineered, IMO.

Yes, the i3 has the carbon fibre chassis and is a dedicated platform etc. Makes some sense.

The LEAF hasn't got long left in production, sadly. Hopefully that means that the development and tooling costs have been written off already, and hence the bean counters will be able to justify cutting the price further before they decide to close the Washington plant.

The daft think about the Leaf is that it's almost always massively discounted, many thousands off the list price or silly finance deals.

The 62kWh Leaf is not a 40k car, it's a 30k car and that's what most people pay for it.

Arguably it's a sub-30k car up against the current competition. It may be relatively well equipped but conceptually it's in the wrong segment and too compromised.
