Please could someone tell me if they have had a stage 1 remap on their golf gte?
If so did this have a negative effect on their fuel economy even when driving gently/normal.
Thanks in Advance

It was awful I know....

I haven't myself no, but I've read some reports into it.

I think one thing you need to be fairly careful of is the gearbox as it's running fairly near its torque limit. Horsepower isn't relevant for gearboxes, but torque is.

I'd suggest having a look at the flying Dutchman on YouTube.

Hes had both the electric motor restriction removed and the engine remapped which gets you close to about 280bhp I believe. That obviously means you've got to save about 50% of the battery to be able to get the required about of battery boost, you won't get that if you've used all the battery up first!

There are some cynics (me including) that think the electric motor restriction was put on to ensure it didn't compete too much with the GTI model.

Thanks Chris

Thanks.
That's so true.

With 280bhp that includes the instant electric torque, not just GTI owners would be thrashed but R32 drivers might be shocked. (not so much above 80mph).

You'd need to be wealthy to go down that route though due to the cost of repairs.
I'm quite careful having had diesel remaps before.
Thankyou but that's very true

Kind of, I ran a TMC Motorsport ‘box’ that tapped into a few sensors (cam shaft position, fuel pressure and manifold pressure IIRC).

It was adjustable via Bluetooth and took the 150PS 1.4 TSI to 181PS. It didn’t change the electric motor mapping at all.

It was certainly effective, I ran it for 80k+ miles, and it never missed a beat, and you could certainly feel the difference when it was turned off via the App.

I know there are remaps now that can tweak the electric motor power, but for simplicity and cost I’d recommend the TMC or something like it if you want your warm hatch to become a bit more hot.

I have had mine remapped.

The GTE is hobbled in software because VW didn’t want it to be faster than the “R”, so big improvements are easily attainable.

1) The remap makes zero difference in electric mode.

2) The standard GTE only deploys 50% electric power in hybrid mode. Simply changing this to 100% makes a huge difference.

3) The 1.4 turbo ICE is a very familiar engine to tuners so it has loads of tried-and-tested opportunities to improve performance safety.

4) Mine is in electric mode 95% of the time so I don’t really get to see the benefit from the remap very often.

5) This forum suffers from people with zero experience or knowledge speaking with authority on a range of topics. I’m sure you’ll get loads of responses from people who’ve never had a car remapped telling you how your gearbox will explode immediately or whatever. Just ignore those folks.

Which map did you go with Stinsy?

I got my 2015 GTE when they were still pretty new and tuners were a bit shy of working on them.

I went with the TMC box as I’d had one for my old Polo GTI, and TMC offered a service back then where you send it back to them, they reflash it for your new car, and supply a new loom if required. It was way more cost effective than either a new box or a map that nobody offered back then.

Worth reading this thread:-

Just because some have not had any issues, doesn't guarantee others won't, especially if the DSG oil has not been changed every 40k.

See post 42 by Liam N in the above thread.

You’ll see posts on here where moan on about “over servicing” cars. How I went 60k mikes without changing the oil on my old Passat and how my A4 with 120k in the clock has had precisely 3 oil changes in its life.

However DSG gearboxes REALLY do need their oil charging every 40k miles or they WILL fail. Remap or no remap…

Actually the only thing I wasn't comfortable with on the GTE (same would be true of most PHEVs I guess) is the way a cold engine can be fired up and asked to deliver full power instantly, such as when fully flooring the pedal in hybrid mode.

Maybe it is this that can kill the turbo?

I always tried to warm the ICE up by using GTE mode on main roads which also tries to keep the battery at about 50% for max performance.

Much like you can do in any ICE car?

I agree though in some ways, it's always best to warm things up first. What a lot of people don't realise is how long things take to warm up.

Most cars will have coolant temp guage, which people will use to judge how warm the engine is. The problem is that it takes much longer to warm the oil up which is much more important and a much better guage of how "warm" the engine is as a whole.

Luckily the GTE does have an oil temp readout and it does take an age to get to a decent temp, probably 20-30 mins of constant motorway driving and longer if it's turning off in more town driving.

One thing I will also note is that the engine won't fire up in electric mode until you press the pedal past the kickdown switch, and to be fair it's quite easy to hold it on that without doing so, it's not as soft as in some cars and is quite a pronounced click/push.

I did a stage 1 remap. On my mk7.5 gte Through a reseller of Celtic tuning in Sweden. My turbo broke after a few months. More likely it has to do with my driving habits ( driving the car like Hamilton without warming up the engine) The difference in acceleration is absolutely bonkers though esp between 90-140kph. Tuner claims approx 270 HP. Which feels accurate

@Stinsy This just means you need to be even more conscious of the running time. I like the idea of no ICE cut out in GTE mode with some of the maps. The racingline map that I have does not do this. Power I think is the same but it would be nice to have constantly running engine in such a mode. Not going to spend another chunk on a different map to get that feature though. I might ask Racingline if they would add it.
