Well I have downloaded the toolbox for Mac, then entered VIN, to old, went to vehicle with USB, then plugged USB into Mac, recognised, then Toolbox would not pick up the formatted USB I had for the maps until I unplugged my other USB backup drive.

Maps downloaded in about 8 minutes, checksum run and now copying onto USB.
Fingers crossed when plugged into car it all works.
What a hulabalo to update the maps.

Update, that didn't work, as when plugged into car it just doesn't register the update. Now trying to just download the UK and Ireland update

And that didn't work either, do you need to use the USB that I plugged in to get the VIN info ? It just says no music file found

Silly question - the second USB drive, which you use for attempting the update, did you plug that in to the car before hand as per the described process ?

Didn't realise needed the same usb, have copied the json directory from the original usb to the map usb and will try shortly. Makes sense to be honest, as it stops people just copying the maps to a USB and sharing out to people.
It's still better than paying the dealership £££ for an un-copyable SD card full of maps.

I done this today. I had 12.2019 maps and have been updated to 12.2021 maps.

Got a 32gb USB, formatted it using my windows laptop, took this out to the car, plugged it in and waited 10 seconds. Removed it, back to the laptop and plugged it in with Renault Connect Toolbox running. It recognised it straight away and presented me with the map update. Took ages (few hours) to download, transfer and check which was surprising as I have 70mb connection. Anyway, once done plugged it into the car with motor on and it recognised it and asked if I wanted to update which I did. Took a further 20 or so minutes then all working fine.

Fun fact - The car does not need to be stationary when installing the map update. You just lose the touchscreen for the duration, but you can drive and the radio still works.

EDIT: 5 minutes after posting this I went back to the car and it is now reporting map version is 2022.02, so it did update successfully and that's an even newer version than @MackScania reported.

Is the latest map update 12.2021 as per @MackScania 's post? I just ran an update for GB and Ireland; originally the car said it was on 2020.03, but following the update it still says 2020.03. Details below.

---

Our car (Sep 2021 ZE50 R135) reported the GB map version as 2020.03 (somewhere in the Car Info submenus) when we bought it. I just went through the update process (thanks to everyone who has contributed to this thread, as a newbie it has provided really useful guidance), got a new update (just for GB) which installed successfully according to the information on the car's console display, but the version is still reported as 2020.03. I tried shutting the car off and re-inserting the USB with the map data on it and it now says the version on the car is the same or newer than the USB so no install needed. (checked again about 20 minutes later and the GB & Ireland map version is now reported as 2022.02).

A couple of other notes for newbies regarding the all-important USB stick and Renault Connect Toolbox:
  • Normally I use a Mac but I couldn't find a working Mac download link for the Renault Connect Toolbox. Fortunately I also have a PC for which I did find a working download/installer.
  • As per previous posts, VIN lookup on the Renault Connect Toolbox doesn't work: you need a USB stick that's got a file on it that's been added automatically by the car.
  • You don't need a 32 GB USB unless you're downloading maps for the whole of Europe. GB & Ireland is 1.75 GB and I used a 16 GB stick which appeared to work okay (after I had problems with a 64 GB micro SD card - see below).
  • Switch on the "engine" before putting the USB stick into the car for the first time. I guess the main console screen also needs to be on (as opposed to standby); not sure if you need to be in a particular menu (don't think so).
  • If the car recognises a new USB stick, when the stick is first plugged in a message appears briefly at the top of the console screen (followed by "no music" if there's none on there). I didn't realise this and for some reason it wasn't recognising a 64GB micro SD card I was initially trying to use (with a USB adapter) (no message was appearing when I plugged that one in).
  • the car takes about 10 seconds to create a new folder called AllianceNDSMapConfig containing the all important .json file (AllianceNDSMapConfig.json).

You can then check your USB on a PC/Mac to see that it has the folder with the .json file in it. If that's there it should work as per previous posts (e.g. summarised by @MackScania just above) - excepting my query about the actual map version that's being downloaded.

I'm trying to see if there are new map updates again. Downloaded the connect toolbox from the french site. Was on 3.2.14 but then the app updated itself to 3.2.19.
Coincidentally, yesterday got the multimedia update to 283C39788R and I don't know if it's because of that but I've tried 5 times to plug the usb pen in the car and there is no way for it to write the map info to the pen  Anybody got this new multimedia version to test it out?

Also I can't see the map version anywhere in the car menus. The map update menu is the place I'm looking but that menu just displays a blank screen.
Why does this needs to be so hard

This is the version showing on ours, after I did the update a couple of weeks ago.

Might be worth check if there's a new version; did mine last week and it's now at 2022.02.
Another thing to try; reboot the multimedia system (long press on power button) and see if it updates the displayed version.

I checked mine again yesterday via the USB method and Connect said there were no further updates. I haven't checked the version number in the car though.

I do recall vaguely when I did the update, the update it gave me was for Europe rather than just the UK and Ireland. It had all the maps checked in Connect and it was about 16gb in size. Not sure if that is why. I'll need to check in the car tomorrow what maps it says it has installed. It definitely was only UK and Ireland before I did the update.

Also, I noticed it has a bridge near where I live that hasn't even been built yet as a route! I had it set to fastest route and it tried to take me over the River Clyde. At first I thought it was thinking the passanger ferry took cars but on closer inspection it had roundabouts on either side, was a bit further up the river and the roads don't even exist yet! Not sure if my update was from the future.

Thank you for this, I've just updated my GB & Ireland maps.

On my first PC, Renault Connect wouldn't recognise the AllianceNDSMapConfig folder. Fortunately, I have a second (almost identical PC) and it worked fine, first time, on that.

After downloading the updated map onto the car, it took around 5 minutes before the map settings updated to reflect the new version (2022.02).

Hi. Did you do anything to trigger the download? Still no map updates on 2 years of ownership for me.
I've never had an OTA update of the maps. I was very surprised to see that @Dion Rust had. I have had some (I think small) system updates OTA.

I've always had to plug in a USB stick to my PC, running the Renault Connect toolbox, to see if an update is available.

This thread does cover what to do, if you read through it. However, all the information you need is on this page: GPS update - Renault multimedia system. The ZE50 has the EASYLINK infotainment system, so follow the instructions in that section.

All I got was a prompt at the top of the screen asking if I would like to proceed with the update. I couple of days later I noticed the map had been updated with new roads etc, I’m guessing it took a few days to download 🤷🏽

There is an option in the nav settings to have automatic map updates turned on, might be worth checking this

This would be the thing to do if you want to force an update if there’s one available. I’ve literally been waiting 6 months for a new bypass to appear! 😂

We have a Clio E-Tech Hybrid. I did the full map update from a USB stick and it updated the maps to 12.2021. Despite automatic updates being switched on, we still don't seem to get any updates over the air?

A message popped up on the top of the screen the other day, saying did we allow automatic updates, which I replied yes to. Still no map updates beyond 12.2021?

Should we be doing something else?

Thanks

This a real mystery as to why it worked for Dion Rust but not others. I have the small iconic model screen. Wonder if that makes a difference. Wish there was some way to force the ota update. Can't be bothered with messing about with SD cards.
It does seem very strange. I’ve got the same ‘build’ date as @rencar, 2021.12 but it only updated a few weeks ago. I’ve taken a few screen shots, one with the bypass that’s been missing for over 6 months!
