Love that it will be on the site of a petrol station. In 10 years time we will be able to ask ICE drivers if they have range anxiety. This is the 2nd petrol station I have read has been converted in the last few days!

Wow! As little as a couple of years ago people were excited for 4 or 8 charger sites...

16 seems pretty good. If it's a former petrol station it probably had less pumps than that!

What's the target for installed chargers this year? If we are going to get close then large scale is required. A couple of years ago it was pathetic and to avoid this year resembling it then "large scale" needs redefining. Keep the pressure on I say. I enjoy not having to queue. :giggle:

Dunno about targets, but...

Agree. Unfortunately the GM area doesn’t have big installations.
18x Tesla points (trafford centre) and 8x MFG (Stretford) are the current largest hubs in GM.
GM is very well off. MFG have really concentrated effort there so there are quite a few hubs of 5-6 chargers. I think it's better provisioned for rapids than anywhere sizeable outside London.

16 is a great site in my book.

MFG has been doing a great work in the GM area, very please with it and I used them quite often tbh. Outside of MFG is very poor (too many unreliable geniepoints/BP/shell, some couples of instavolt in Mcdonalds/similar and some BeEv). I guess apart from MFG that IS a representation of the rest of the country (outside London).

Manchester is better covered than many UK cities.. Especially by MFG - Aside from Stretford there are 6 at Failsworth, Ardwick, Levenshulme, Gatley, Ashton, 5 at Oldham, and 4's at another Oldham site, Chorlton, Salford..

Manchester’s Be.EV ‘Oasis’ gets go-ahead
Manchester City Council has approved electric vehicle charging network Be.EV to build the city’s first large-scale electric vehicle (EV) charging ‘Oasis’.

The project will see the charging provider transform an old former petrol station site on the corner of Reliance Street and Oldham Road into a green forecourt and community hub.

The site will include commercial space for local businesses and provide ultra-rapid charging for 16 electric vehicles, including accessible and van-suitable spaces, as well as secure charging for electric bicycles.
The site’s 16 ultra-rapid chargers will charge a typical EV in ten minutes, compared to four to six hours on a 7kW fast charger.

The permission came quite quickly, which is great. Councils often sit on these things for a while. It only popped up a month or two ago on the planning portal. The site has been disused for a while, since the old petrol station was removed. So that makes things easier. There isn't a lot of room for more so 16 plus onsite shop is right. Given where it is located there probably isn't a near term need for a larger site.

To get range anxiety in my diesel Passat it would need over 80% of petrol stations to close as when 1/4 fill it still have more range then most EVs. Keeping an existing petrol station open will give good profits once there is less competition, the issue will come when the last petrol station in an area needs the tanks replacing. Hence more like 20 years then 10 years time.

Yes I have a Passat diesel too. My last one confused staff at fuel stations because it could load at truck filling pumps, very, very quickly! 50 litres in 15 seconds!

I suspect there's a lot of road left for petrol stations. As demand falls, I suspect more stations will choose to downsize and refurb with smaller tanks and fewer pumps than fully close.
Changing tanks would be very poor business sense. The economics of getting the permissions filling a big hole and rearranging pups to sell less of something? Methinks they will just close down. Repair garages might have a 200 litre tank to add fuel for testing! I also suspect that the Gridserve route with all road level space taken up with chargers and the heavy duty electrical equipment piled up and on overbridge level lighter electrics and shop or coffee bar!
